Lucas' first days
Lucas was and still is a doll.
He had some feeding issues. The nurse had to feed him with a little tube on a syringe. He just didn't have the strength to do it himself. He was experiencing issues with his temperature regulation. But of course he is a strong little trooper. He made it through.
The doctor came in on Sunday morning and was in a rush. She said, Lucas has markers for Down Syndrome and started naming the eyes, his ears are lower set and folded, his feet are floppy etc etc etc. Nothing good like oh he is healthy, he sounds good. Just all "negatives" and this was all said in between her answering her cell to talk to her son about church. She started telling us that he needed this test and that test. Blah Blah Blah. I just wanted to tell her to beat it and give me my perfect baby. Because that is what he was to me. Needed more hair but other than that he was perfect.
Lucas had more issues with feeding at night. He was a little piggy for me in my room but he just didn't like others to feed him. Of course I was scared they would send him to another hospital.
My experience turned out to be something else. I received 2nd and 3rd degree chemical burns from the chloraprep they used on me. I had huge blisters and it turned nasty and painful over the weeks ahead.
I also had to have blood on Tues so Lucas and I didn't leave the hospital until Wed.
The nurses were great and tried to find me all kinds of information on Down Syndrome and what else was needed for Lucas. It was a huge learning experience and a quick one for me.
Left the hospital and had to go to Children's Mercy on Friday for an echo of his heart and some blood testing. They tried to get his blood there where he was born but they poor baby got poked 5 times in his arm and I am not sure how many in his feet. He went through at lot of those pokes for no reason. Machines messed up and not enough blood taken etc. No wonder he didn't want to be around them.
